Great Wood is located about 10 miles north of the Historic city of York, just outside the village of Flaxton.
You can use your Sat nav if you like until you get to the village of Flaxton, then please be advised to turn it off or you could end up at the wrong side of a railway line and cars are unable to cross at this point.
Once you reach the outskirts of York from whichever direction follow the signs for the A64 heading towards Scarborough and Malton. (From A1M can get straight onto the A64, from A19 follow York ring road signs to the A64 Scarborough). You will all arrive at a huge roundabout (known as the Hopgrove roundabout) controlled by traffic lights. Continue along A64 towards Scarborough. About 4/5 miles along this road turn left off the A64 to the village of Flaxton (Signposted Flaxton & Sherriff Hutton). (If you hit the dual carriageway on the A64 you have gone too far).
Follow the road into the village of Flaxton (you will see the Blacksmith’s Pub on your right) keep straight on past the pub over a railway line crossing, towards the end on the village, (you will see the local car repairs and sales garage on your right), keep going straight on then less than half a mile from the railway crossing turn left at a small country cross roads (single track tarmac road with passing places). There is no signpost to the left but if you turn right here it is sign posted to High Stittingham.
Travel along this road for nearly one mile the road then bends very sharply to the right, but in front of you will see a stone track, proceed onto the stone track, woodland will be on your left (there is a pylon on the corner ignore the gate way just past the pylon), field ditch will be on your left, the entrance to Great Wood is about 100 yards along on the left. Please have a save journey.
